Xbox Boss Phil Spencer’s Thoughts on PS5 Reveal Shared in Leaked Email

US court documents have leaked internal emails from Microsoft, including communications between Xbox boss Phil Spencer and top executives, in which he shared his reaction to Sony’s PS5 reveal in March 2020.

Phil Spencer sent out the email addressed to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood after Sony’s PS5 event that revealed hardware specifications. According to the email, the Microsoft Gaming CEO’s “stress level was higher than normal” on the morning of the event, but after “almost 12 hours of soaking in their unveil,” he felt more confident in his team and product.

Spencer continued, “We have a better product than Sony does, not just on hardware but equally important on the software platform and services on top of the hardware. We have the ingredients of a winning plan.”

The email was sent on March 18, 2020, and the PS5 was released worldwide on November 19, 2020. Since then, the PS5 has been a massive success in unit sales while the Xbox Series struggled. Spencer famously admitted to “losing the console wars” back in May after it was revealed that Xbox had fallen behind Sony and Nintendo.
