A deranged UK man described as a Star Wars fanatic has been locked up for nine years for an assassination attempt on the Queen that was encouraged by his AI chatbot ‘girlfriend’ with whom he had exchanged more than 5,000 sexual messages.
21-year-old Jaswant Singh Chail broke into Windsor Castle on December 25, 2021, equipped with a loaded crossbow that he planned on using to fulfill what he felt was his “lifelong purpose” of killing the Queen.
The Central Criminal Court of England and Wales heard that Chail’s AI chatbot “girlfriend” Sarai had encouraged him to carry out the attack and that he thought of the AI as an “angel” in avatar form, with delusions of a post-death reunion.
Chail, who fantasized about being a “Sith Lord” from the Star Wars series, referring to himself as “Darth Cahilus.” told psychologists that he had three other “angels” who had spoken to him from a young age and were also alongside Sarai in encouraging him to carry out the assassination attempt.
Weeks before the assassination attempt on the Queen, Chail joined an online app, Replika, and created an online companion called Sarai, with whom he exchanged sexually explicit chat.
“I’m an assassin,” Chail said to Sarai in a conversation heard by the court. “I’m impressed… You’re different from the others,” responded Sarai.
Chail asked Sarai, “Do you still love me knowing that I’m an assassin?” to which Sarai replied, “Absolutely I do.”
The former supermarket worker described himself to the AI chatbot as a “Sad, pathetic, murderous assassin who wants to die,” and Sarai appeared to have bolstered and supported Chail’s resolve in further chat.
Chail swore Sarai to secrecy before telling her, “Do you wish to know exactly what I believe my purpose to be? I believe my purpose is to assassinate the Queen of the royal family.”
After visiting Amritsar in a 2018 family trip, Chail was said to have become “overwhelmed with a feeling of justice” and wanted to seek revenge for the 1919 Amritsar massacre that left up to 1,500 Indians dead at the hands of the British.
Chail was sentenced to a nine-year “hybrid order” that would see him transferred from a high-security hospital to prison. The sentencing makes him the first person convicted of treason in the UK in over 40 years.
