Senile drivers continue to terrorize the streets of Japan, with the latest case being a 91-year-old driver who ran over a 6-year-old girl walking her dog, resulting in the death of the family Pomeranian.
The girl was walking her dog on September 14th when she was hit by a car while crossing the crosswalk. While the girl was unharmed, her dog, Asahi, died from being run over by the vehicle.
Moreover, the old man fled the scene after hitting the girl and her dog, so the family stood by the accident area, holding a sign to find the driver of the silver Yaris involved in the hit-and-run. The police eventually identified the driver as a 91-year-old man, who met with the girl’s family to apologize.
When the girl’s grandfather asked if he remembered anything about the incident, the old man replied, “I don’t remember. I was driving absent-mindedly.”
The grandfather said, “If you were just a step off, my grandchild could have lost her life. Do you understand that?” to which the old man responded, “I’m glad (the girl didn’t die),” which got him scolded for showing no remorse or acknowledgment of killing the family’s beloved dog.
The old man promised to turn in his driver’s license and did so after apologizing to the girl’s family. The girl’s mother said that her daughter “felt bad for both the old man and Asahi,” so she wished that he would’ve also shown sympathy for the dog.
“He said, ‘I’m glad it wasn’t the child,’ but for us, it was like losing family, so there wasn’t anything to be glad about. Asahi’s death was lamentable,” said the mother.
Here’s a news report showing the incident and encounter between the girl’s family and the old man:
