The Tokyo High Court has ordered a hospital to pay compensation for the illegal forced hospitalization of a hikikomori taken from his home by a private company.

The hikikomori in his 30s was at his Kanto region home when individuals from a private company arrived, claiming to support the independence of hikikomori people. However, he was forced to stay at the psychiatric ‘Seijin Hospital’ for 50 days.

The Tokyo District Court decided on September 21st that the hospital must pay 3.08 million yen to the victim after ruling that the hospitalization was illegal due to the lack of examination by a designated doctor.

Such business practices are considered extortion in Japan for having a rather opaque relationship with psychiatric care. “I believe there are people who are being forcibly hospitalized in the same way against their wishes. There needs to be a better system in place for the government to check on such cases,” said the hikikomori’s lawyer.
