US courts leaked an email sent by Xbox boss Phil Spencer, in which he discussed among colleagues the possibility of a Nintendo acquisition as a “prime asset” to the company.
It’s no secret that Microsoft has been eyeing Nintendo for quite some time now, but in the unredacted court documents published by US courts overnight it shows Phil Spencer discussing the move with Microsoft executive vice president Takeshi Numoto.
The conversation started as a TikTok acquisition, but Phil Spencer had more to say about Nintendo:
“Takeshi, I totally agree that Nintendo is THE prime asset for us in Gaming and today Gaming is our most likely path to consumer relevance. I’ve had numerous conversations with the LT of Nintendo about tighter collaboration and feel like if any US company would have a chance with Nintendo we are probably in the best position.”
At the time, Microsoft was planning on expanding its gaming division with Warner Brothers Interactive and ZeniMax, but Nintendo was certainly a primary target. Phil Spencer also commented that it was taking Nintendo a long time to “see that their future exists off of their own hardware.”

It’s worth noting that Microsoft approached Nintendo for a possible buyout 20 years ago, to which Nintendo “laughed their asses off.”
